Eye infection?

I picked up a dozen white coturnix about a month ago from a very reputable farm. They are all doing fine, laying, eating, getting fat...

But some of them have what looks like an eye infection. I can't decide if I have a dominant bird pecking, or if they have something going on. They are in an enclosure that is 6 feet x 4 feet x 6 feet high.

I have about 9 three week old chicken chicks in there as well, they all seem pretty healthy.

Do white quail have typically have eye problems? Not all of them have eye issues, maybe about three or four of them. I've flushed their eyes and put some plain ointment in them. I thought about hitting them with a round of antibiotics.

Yep, from over here in the peanut gallery I'd guess you got sick birds from the chickens.

Interesting - and thanks! I'll have to read up on Coryza. I thought infected chickens had symptoms. The chicks that are in with the quail were hatched indoors and raised in the house until I put them into the quail cage - they've had no other exposure to the flock. They are still tiny and the quail do not pick on them, that is why I put them in there. I've introduced lots of newly hatched chicks back into the flock this year and no respiratory problems.

My quail's eyes aren't quite that bad - they are just kind of gooey around them.

The farm that I purchased the quail from said to hang quail cages in my chicken coop so that the food wasted by the quail fell on the ground and the chickens would eat it. I haven't done that, the quail are in their own large cage that is on my covered patio. I've got turkeys that run with my chickens, and they've never had any issues. I worried about blackhead for a long time, but I haven't had a problem.

The chickens can carry it without symptoms, but I'm no authority on the subject, read the why not to put chickens with quail thread here, lots of good information there.

I examined them tonight, it looks like I've only got one with an eye issue but it's a doozy. The others that looked gooey yesterday don't look so bad today. I think I may cull this one that looks so bad.

I'm going to sit down after dinner and study up. These are my first quail.

If y'all don't mind I'm going to jump in ... I'm reading on how chickens can get quail sick. My question can quail get chickens sick as well? It seems from all my research so far it's only chickens to quail.

A quails’ immunity system isn’t as robust as a chickens. Any bird that has access to where chickens free range, or come into contact with chickens, the bird can pass on a disease. Having been infected, the chickens will be able to build their immunity system. But in most cases, quail are confined (as they cannot be free ranged like chickens), so any contact with a new infection will devastate the entire flock.
So theoretically, quail can pass something on to chickens, but the chances that the chicken hasn’t already been exposed is slim.

They do get eye infections sort of frequently in certain situations. Can you post a picture?

Coryza causes smelly discharge from sinuses. If you don't smell anything foul around the nostrils it's most likely not coryza.

There are other things it could be though so a picture would be the most helpful.
