Eye injury or something else??

Last night and this morning she seemed withdrawn, and I could tell she didn’t feel good. She was opening the cloudy eye some this morning so the flushing or lube yesterday must have helped a tiny bit. I took her to the vet this afternoon, and he thinks she got pecked or injured her eye some other way. She had a 106 fever so that would make her not feel good (normal 102-103), and her eye is swollen and red all around it. He gave her an antibiotic shot that lasts two weeks (Convenia). He also gave me neo-poly-dex ointment to put in her eye 3x a day. He said she *might* recover her sight in that eye. He doesn’t think it’s a disease since all the other birds are fine.

When I got her home from the vet in the blazing hotness of the afternoon, she ran to a corner and laid down. When we went to check on her this evening and do her eye ointment, she was perched on this ladder and seemed more like her old self. She had the eye open and although it’s still very swollen, there seemed to be less redness.

In hindsight what I should have done was to flush her eye (I used my contact lens solution and vet said that was ok) and put the Optixcare on it as soon as I noticed her holding her eye shut. Maybe that would have prevented the infection she’s fighting now? It couldn’t have hurt. Now that I’ve seen a vet lay a chicken on her back and check all over her, I can try to be more confident in examining my chickens in the future.

I'm glad that she's feeling a bit better.
Don't lose hope that it will get better either, we have a pet rabbit that developed a very nasty ulcer in one of her eyes.
The vet said it would have to be removed, but we decided to wait a couple of days more, and it's now fully healed!

That’s very encouraging!! I am so hoping that Mildred doesn’t have to pay the price of an eye for my inexperience and ignorance.

Thanks for asking! :) I think she's slowly improving. She had her eye open more today, although it is still cloudy looking. I think it looks less swollen. I will try to remember to get a picture tomorrow for comparison.

Mildred has her eye open today and she’s feeling feisty, trying to peck at the other birds while enjoying some frozen treats. The vet did tell me to separate her but that seemed to really, really stress her out, and I haven’t seen any aggression or curiosity from the other birds so for now she’s with her siblings.

At least in this photo, I think its possibly looking a bit less cloudy as well?
I love all the different colours by the way, what breed is the black and white one with feathered legs?
In the straight-on picture, that eye looks all white but from the side, I can see pupil or iris or something so hopefully that’s a good sign.

Thanks! I went a bit nuts and picked out 18 different breeds. I don’t know which ones are which for about half of them but I do know that little black and white one with the feathered legs is a Mottled Cochin Bantam. I only got two bantams and they were straight run so of course, both roosters. I’m hoping they’ll be nice boys and keep getting along.

Mildred’s hurt eye seems to be better and we think she does have some sight in it, although it’s definitely not normal. I’m wondering now about the skin around that eye? It’s kind of like a bald patch that seems to be growing — please see previous pictures compared with these…
