2 and a half year old Rhode Island Red... We found her this afternoon with blood, and her eye is producing a cloudy discharge. No vets will see chickens in our area. She is not eating or drinking. Occasionally her beak opens briefly, but no sound. She is the cuddliest chicken and my son's favorite. Suggestions?

Do you know what happened to her? Is the the blood from a puncture or cut? Has it clotted yet? Do you have a rooster with spurs? Have there been any hawks, cats, or predators around? The material coming out of the eye could be from a punctured eye ball. Can you get some Bausch and Lomb Eye relief saline eye wash (eye care aisle at Walmart or a pharmacy) and some Terramycin eye ointment, from a feed store, Vetericyn eye gel, or plain Neosporin ointment? I would treat the eye twice a day, first with the eye wash and then the eye ointment. If the blood is not stopping, you can use some corn starch or flour on it. Then later clean it and apply the ointment.

The blood has clotted. We don't know what happened. There are hawks and other predators in our area, but our 12 year old was out in the yard at the time and didn't see anything. We have a rooster. He is one year younger than this chicken and pretty tame. They don't let him mount them often, but he does have developed spurs now. We separated her from the others for the night. I will try to get the saline and ointment you suggested.

And thank you.

Let us know how he gets along. If his eye is blinded, he may have some trouble aiming at food and water. I would offer some watery chicken feed and egg up to his beak a couple of times a day.

She is perkier today. The shock seems to be starting to wear off. She is taking food and water now, though a bit clumsier than before. We are so grateful for your suggestions. We are keeping her separate from the rest of the flock for now and are looking into filing down the rooster's spurs. It looks like she is unable to use the one eye that was hurt.

So good to hear that she is better. Let us know how she continues to get along.
She seems to have successfully reintegrated with the flock, eating normally and interacting with the other chickens. She is still as cuddly as ever. Thank you so much for the help!
