Eye injury

I can use regular erythromycin opthamic ointment on chickens, yes? I keep it on hand for the basset with entropion issues, have several different types depending on what he's done to it if I need a different type. If you aren't sure what this is it goes on the eye itself to help treat infections of the eye and inner lids.

Joe (NHR 30 weeks) was involved in a rather heated game of keep away with a massive caterpillar on Sunday. Got a few nasty pecks to the face, we treated with Blue Kote but her eye looked worse this morning. Brought her in and the eye socket looks a bit infected, foamy junk in the corners that don't smell, has a few cuts to the inner part of the lid itself too but they look decent. Have her in a crate in the living room entertaining the cats.

Other than the eye looking nasty she's fine, eating pooping normally, no shaking of head or anything. Just want to get it nipped in the bud before it gets any worse.

FYI, it's fine to use on chickens if needed. Just figured someone out there would like to know just in case.

Erythromycin has a limited spectrum of activity for bacteria. Yes, it shouldn't hurt the chicken, but may not be very helpful beyond the lubrication factor. Same with the basset- won't fix entropion (he needs surgery), but if he happens to get a bacterial infection on top of the irritation from the rolled lid- it may help with that. More likely it is just helping lubricate the tissues. It is more often used for mycoplasma & chlamydia infections in cats, minimal use in dogs- but generally safe for them too.

He's had his surgery (twice now since February) but since he was a rescue and left like that for his first 8 years, he still has the occasional issue with dry eyes followed by infection. We are thinking he'll need one more surgery to complete the fix but we are on a wait and watch cycle for now!

Also have the chloramphenicol ointment and the triple antibiotic ointment as well for his infections, as well as the saline solution etc for cleaning up his eyes.
Chicken Joe is looking a bit better, a lot less swelling, vet wanted me to use the triple antibiotic tonight if there is still the bubbling going on. So we'll see....
