Did a mini-eggtopsy tonight on a duck that had internally pipped, but not externally. Chipped the shell away and there was a little dark fleck sitting on the feathers. Egg tooth? Felt the bill, and sure enough, the tip was smooth, with a faint line making a ring about the size of the dark fleck. bizarre.
Has anyone heard of an egg tooth coming off during hatch before? Is it a defect, or a sign that the egg shell was exceptionally hard? (it seemed really hard to me, but the only ones I've chipped open were two that didn't manage to pip, so I don't have a pip-able egg shell to compare against!)
