eyes matted shut?

My babies were 3 days old and began to have their eyes matted shut. Like 3 of them. I searched for some remedies and got a few ideas but had none of the meds suggested. My wife said we had some eye ointment that I had bought but never had been used, so, I tried it on the chicks. It was Equate brand Restore PM, Nighttime Lubricant Eye Ointment. The matted eyes cleared right up and the babies are looking great. Hope this helps anyone with the "Matted Eyes" problem.

Thanks for the info! At first I thought this was a question, and was going to reply with "cotton wool and warm water".

I just used water to clear hatch gunk from eyes...poor little chick couldn't see anything, and it was all black and I couldn't see that it's eyelids were glued shut.
