I have had G fowl all of my life. BUT, I just googled pictures of them and was shocked to see the wild ones have BLUE faces! How come all of the many I have seen and raised for many years always had white faces ??? I want BLUE faced ones and if anyone knows why there is a difference, please tell me. Thank you and make everyday an adventure ! Todd

I asked the same question back in May when I first got my guineas. Here's the response I got:

Quote: Both my Hens and males develop blue faces and also the throat latch area, during the Spring usually... so it's either a breeding season thing, or possibly due to their healthy spring diet, or maybe just a sign of maturity. Maybe others have input on this, but I have not narrowed it down to what/why/how it happens with my flocks.

Some of mine got a little bit of blue this summer, mostly around their eyes.

As the season progressed and my birds got older the blue hue became less and less noticeable, especially on my lighter colored birds. My darker colored birds (Pearl Greys and Royal Purples) seemed to show it the most, so it may have something to do with the natural, wild charcoal grey/black base color gene, as well as maturity and possibly diet. Now, with Fall approaching and the breeding season coming to an end here, (and not much in the way of bugs and greens for them to forage while out free ranging this time of year) I don't see any blue faces or throats areas on any of my colors...

Maybe Casarius can answer this better if he happens to see this thread, he breeds some of the rare/wild varieties.
