My neighbor bought a straight run of Rhode Island Reds, and Leghorns. Turns out that 5 were roos. He wants to 'off' them, but doesn't know how and really isn't wanting to have to do that. So I was going to offer to buy them off of him and have my husband and I process them instead.

What would be a fair price for each one?

FAIR would be his cost of production.
REALISTIC would be meat in Grocery store cost plus a little more depending on how good a guy he is. Personally I would not pay over $4 a bird for meat. Not that much on them.

I am selling 3 sexlink pullets to a friend for 7.50 each . I loose a little but they are spares and most of the feed went into the meatbirds anyway so....

That all said. Tell him you'll do the deed and give him half the meat if you get the other half free. Also tell him not to get used to the arrangement.

Not that this post helps answer the question, but I keep seeing posts on craigslist where people are trying to sell their roosters, for up to $11 each! One that I saw recently said, "$5 to a good home." It made me wonder if a freezer was a good home...

My thoughts are that people with roosters should PAY ME to take them off their hands.

Why not offer to teach him how to process the roosters? Then you could share the meat. If he agreed to share the work I'd say fair was 3 for him & 2 for you. But if he doesn't want to get involved then I'd say do them all yourselves, and keep 3 & give him 2. I'd try not to get actual dollars involved in the deal.

Oh we offered to help him process for one bird in exchange... which he didn't have a personal issue with but he has 3 daughters who say that they REFUSE to eat any chicken that they raise, so he's afraid the girls will make a stand and cause a fuss. He's just trying to stop a war in the house.

He's a great neighbor actually and we share eggs with him from our silkies since we have the only laying hens in the neighborhood right now, we also swap produce from our gardens. Cukes, squash, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant.... ect!

I also let them have some feed for their ducks in swap for them feeding my chickens while I was out of town. Its going very nice with them, and I was asking because I did not want to insult him with a price before I talked to him.

(I may do the reverse and offer to process them for him and give him one back plus 2-3 dz eggs for the rest of the summer since his hens are WAY away from laying)

My husband beat me to it... my husband is going to 'dehead' them and drain them for my neighbor. Talked about it before I could go over and offer. He's going to give us one bird for it.

However, I'm sweet enough to try to find them a few more laying age birds!

There are people here trying to sell "laying hens" on craigslist for $25 a bird.

There are also several adds that say 'free roosters to a good home BUT YOU CAN'T EAT HIM!'.

Wow, you can get a meaty bird fully processed at the grocery store for $5. I like the idea of taking them all off his hands for free, and giving him one or two of them back processed. Don't tell the kids it's their bird.
