I plan on selling them for a buck a piece BUT that is to a neighbor down the street who will be selling us home grown organic pork and a good price

Does that sound fair? What would you do? I have 10 laying hens and getting about 5-7 eggs a day from them.

A buck a piece is CHEAP!! Consider how many eggs that is...5-7 a day equals 35-49 a week!! That's 3 dozen a week minimum. I'd sell them for at least $5 each. If they are still that productive they are well worth it. He is still getting a good deal IMO.

A fair price is what you want for them, simple as that. If you're getting a good enough deal on the pork that $1 is worth it to you so you can make room for younger layers, go for it. That sentence is awful, geeze I'm going brain dead. In other words, if it makes you happy, it's fair.

$5 for a layer who is mixed breed is a great deal. Heck a decent layer will lay near 10 dozen eggs a year, at $3 a dozen she has paid hearself off and then some.

I gave mine away last weekend. 25 of them haven't layed more than 2 or 3 eggs a day in over 2 months. I feel with the money I am saving on feed I did make money on them

(plus, I had to make room for the new chicks this spring anyway)

We will get to visit with them so that makes it easier.

WOW I wasn't expecting people to say, ask more because of their age I just thought they just go downhill from here LOL They are all laying really well yet and just started up again after their molt so he will get them this summer all laying pretty decent yet. I am getting a good deal on the pork tho so maybe I will up to 2.00 a dozen that will buy two bags of chicks starter for my new chicks too. Thanks for the comments

They have given us ALOT of eggs in their two years here that's for sure. I picked some good ones

Hope my new crew does just as well.

OP- What kind of chickens were they that were laying so well at 2 years old? I am still trying to figure out which breed or breeds would be good long term layers for us.

And 1.00 is a great price for the buyer, I would think 5.00 would be a good, fair price for hens that age; especially since they are laying well. But as you said, they give you a good price for homemade pork(yummy!)
