I have a golden campine rooster that is some what aggressive. He don't attack all the time but when he dose he is very mean. I do not want to get rid of him. He takes good care of the 6 hens I have with him. Any information would be great!! Thanks!!!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Many roosters are very protective of their ladies. If he only attacks when someone gets near him or the hens, then it makes sense that he is just being protective. You can try hand feeding though. This is a great taming technique. Or maybe trying isolating him from the other chickens for a day or so to help calm him down. When one of my chickens is being aggressive, I put them in "jail" or a cage for a bit to help calm them down. It always works for me but I've never tried it with a rooster.

Thanks for the warm invite!!

I have tried the hand feeding and it has not worked yet!! I have not given up on him. I will try the isolation and keep trying to hand feed. Thanks for the information!!

There are a lot of good threads on BYC about how to properly raise a rooster. Try using the search bar above to find more information. Do be careful with the hand feeding, if you decide to go that route. There are many on BYC who believe that roosters who are treated more like "pets" are the ones that end up being more aggressive because they view that treatment as the human being submissive. I have seen this first hand in my own roosters. My meanest roo was one that used to follow me around like a puppy dog when he was younger. In my naivete, I used to think what a great bird he was, until he attacked me, and did not seem to learn when I showed my dominance. On the other hand, my best roos have been the ones that I basically ignored when they were younger (other than to do basic health inspections), "walked through" to get from one place to another, and never turned my back on.

Good luck with whatever method you decide to use.

Thanks for the information. When the roo dose attack what is the best method for dealing with him. He has ran at me and flew chest high. And every time I go the the coop he will follow me in full strut from end to end.(I'm on the outside of the pen) I open the door and he is "all there".

Oh no, not a mean rooster! I've dealt with several mean rooster and turkeys, and they are not fun! One thing that I've found works pretty well is a spray bottle filled with water (a water gun will work too) give him a good quirt with every time he comes after you. This works with most roosters but there are always exceptions. Here is a great (long) post I found on dealing with aggressive roosters: hsttp://www.backyardchickens.com/t/390911/important-how-to-deal-with-an-aggressive-rooster

Hope this helps!
