Fake eggs for laying encouragement

My son is the bar/restaraunt manager at our local country club. I just talked to him the other day about what they do with the golfballs that they find on the course. He said he'd get me some to use in my nest boxes. Free encouragement! Yay!

the stones they use for the pot plants works well:thumbsup

Luckily DH is an avid golfer so he has tons of old balls in his shag bag (oh that sounds kinda dirty for some reason

) Mine are getting really close to laying so I am going to put some in the nesting boxes this weekend mainly so they know where to lay.

I lucked out here because I inherited my neighbors hens and they knew where to lay. Now there are usually 2 eggs most mornings for us.

It worked for us! I put golf balls in the nest boxes when they were around 16 weeks old, and before long I could tell they had been practicing sitting in there. Their first eggs were laid in the nest boxes so I'm a believer!

Was doing some searching for what to do to push my older pullets to start laying> Golf balls I think I will try!
WisconsinChickenWhisperer stop by the wisconsin thread under where am I topic and say Hi to the other wisconsinites!
Thanks for the idea wasnt sure where I was going to get fake eggs... W.C.

There are also nest egg gourds....when I was a kid we called them egg simlings (no idea why---from he word resembling maybe). My Mom always kept them in the hen's nests to keep them laying in the right place. I had one come up beside the house this year and it pretty much took over the back yard. One seed and the thing is **huge**. It's near the end now but still blooming. I'm interested in seeing how many gourds it produces...I counted over 15 one day just looking around the edges.

Would you beleive my hubby just went to the local Feed And Supply store and they DON'T carry eggs past when they sell the chicks, so they don't have them?!?! isn't that crazy??? Guess we have to try golf balls...
