Fall Babies

Oh they are so darn cute!!

What a difference one week can make. The babies have more feathers and Speedy is changing from a flashy white chick to a cute buffish color with neat markings.
Both Speedy and the Sussex girl still have the most feathers.

I opened the door on the brood pen to let them play in the rest of the coop. It is time to let them get used to more room for exploring as they are all the same size and keeping up with each other pretty good. Blueberry is doing such a good job with her second brood!

The majority of the flock pretty much ignore the babies; however, Boobear still has a grudge due to being kicked out for being mean to the Sussex girl (I gotta think of a name for this white cutie). Boobear made a rush at the chicks only to be confronted by Blueberry who was not gonna back down. I am hoping to slowly work the family into integration as Rosie will be hatching her brood by Wednesday hopefully. Playing it by ear as it really depends on the flock as to the when part.

The kids are growing up too fast!
It has not been a complete week yet and you can still see the changes. Buttercup (Sussex chick) is the youngest, but is as big as the oldest chick.
The kids love when they have full run of the coop which makes it harder to get a good picture of them. They just can't stay still.

Blueberry: "Oh you want a family photo? Well I am not sure the kids will be still long enough."

Blueberry calls the kids to a spot but grooms as the camera clicks

Blueberry tries to herd them together but the kids are just too hyper.

Well, maybe a few single shots of the kids would work.

Speedy makes a perfect pose; however, Buttercup is distracted by a bug.

The eldest, which may be a boy, poses; but, again Buttercup is distracted by a more pressing urge.

Ebony forgets that she is on camera and oops....

Oh my, today was not the best day to get pictures afterall. Guess I will try again on another day for the perfect family pose.

LOL - I don't believe in perfect family photos. They're all adorable, although I'm partial to your little EE

Thanks, Speedy gets prettier everyday. Speedy and Buttercup usually stay pretty close to each other. It is fun watching them play n explore.

Today was a beautiful day despite being cold with strong winds. Rosie even managed to get the kids together for a family photo. Yep she used bribery with a bit of scratch.

Ofcourse, getting everyone ready for bed was a different story as the kids still wanted to play.

Today was beautiful and not windy like yesterday. After getting home from dropping Rufus off for his surgery at the vet I let the chickens out to romp in the yard. They took full advantage of the nice day. The family mostly stayed in the coop with a couple of the kids peeking out from the pop door. Speedy even hopped up as she was very curious why all the grown up chickens make such a scene to race outside.

Eventually curiousity won over and 3 of the kids darted outside. Blueberry was immediately concerned about this as she did not like them to run off by themselves. What if one of those cats was around! She called them repeatedly until they came back inside; however, the kids had a taste for adventure now and wanted to go back out. "Momma, can we please go play outside?" they persisted. Blueberry said, "Alright, but we go as a family and stay close as there are dangers outside." The kids were joyous and happily raced to the pop door led by Speedy. Momma followed and ushered them out. She then led them to a nice grassy area near the philadondra plant that gives great cover from hawks.

The flock noticed the kids had finally come outside and were pleased with this. The older Wyandotte hens kept coming over to see the youngsters. Even Lester gave them notice. Ofcourse a few of the older pullets wanted to play chase with the kids but were sternly told to stop or else by momma Blueberry. Blueberry is ever protective of her brood.

The kids loved the feel of the grass under their feet and the sun's warmth on their feathers & skin. They stayed close to mom and did what she did. The outside had so much to see!
However, Blueberry felt it was best to keep the kids close to the coop on their first outing and warily watched them at play. The kids got all tuckered out so as the sun began to set with a soft warm glow, Blueberry led them back inside to be tucked in their nest for the night.
