I'm beginning to plan for my fall/winter lawn. Is annual ryegrass safe for chickens?

Also, what about fertilizer? I found Medina Hasta Gro Lawn with the following ingredients:

Derived from Urea, Phosphoric Acid, Potassium Nitrate, Potassium Hydroxide, EDTA Iron, EDTA Manganese, EDTA Zinc, EDTA Copper, Sodium Molybdate, Leonardite Ore.

Supposed to be all natural and includes a soil activator.

Thanks,

Kenneth

Thank you for the info.

Does it matter if the fertilizer is granule or liquid? I guess I should've mentioned that this is a liquid fertilizer that connects to the garden hose for dilution and application to the lawn and garden. It's supposed to be an all natural fertilizer with a soil activator and liquid hummus.

Liquid is better but even natural fertilizer can be toxic or not good for them in larger quantities. I guess it would all depend on how much you put on and how much you water but I would want to be on the safe side. It wont hurt the chickens to be in for a few days.

We are farmers :)

if the seed is treated (usually colored red to reddish purple), absolutely no chicken in the area. Fungicide treatment is very toxic.

If you use granule again no. Chicken might thing its grit. If you use liquid fertilizer wait a few days for the fertilizer to wash into the soil. If you are using a liquid fertilizer with fertilizer injection on your irrigation system then its not a good idea unless you have no more fertilizer mix coming out of the system for few days. Even organic fertilizer used in injection system is not good to expose chicken.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like I'll fertilize on Monday and wait until the weekend to let the chickens into the yard.

Thanks again for the help!!

What if you used corn gluten, coffee grounds, alfalfa pellets, or pine pellets on your lawn instead of a true fertilizer? Or top dress with compost? I think I am going to try one these things this year for the first time.
