Fall Leaves

I put leaves in my chickens run, they reduce them to nothing! I also gather the bags of leaves around the neighborhood for my compost heap. I had so many I had to take them out and pile them along the fence because the heap was not decomposing. In the few weeks I have had my 10x10 kennel run they have pretty much gone through all my leaves. I rake them out once every week and a half to 2 weeks and put fresh in.

I'm going to need a new source for leaves! Now I mostly just put kitchen scraps and some of the chicken litter in the heap. The rest of it is in the middle of my garden, finishing up composting so I can spread it where i need it.

I use hardware cloth that is tied together for my compost pile. It's just to keep my doggies out of it. I have been placing the chicken processed leaves in a pile in the garden, not sure what I will do with them come spring. I'll probably allocate part of my garden to chicken litter leaves. That will give me 2 piles, one with wire around it and one just piled up.

I started putting leaves in my lot years ago when I noticed that the leaves that were falling from the trees over the pen were being shredded by the birds almost as fast as they hit the ground. I have 6 acres and my birds are kept in/at the barn about 100 yards from the house so there is no real need for me to rake the leaves in that area. I do it just for the benefit of the birds. They love digging through the leaf piles and it keeps their minds occupied and the insects they find helps supliment their diet.
