I am so upset right now. My hubby and I got back in tonight to find one of my Rouens dead by the coop door. I immediately called my inlaws as they frequently check on the animals when we're away, and sure enough, my FIL said he saw our dog running around the yard with one of the 3 that I had in his mouth. One was already laying there dead. Can't find the last one. When the dog finally dropped the one in his mouth, it scurried away to it's pen, then FIL shut the door to keep it in. Dog went back in the house till we got home.
I may not have been SO upset if this had only been the first time, but this is the THIRD time he's done it. He killed a baby chicken in the house this spring, chased and killed a Rouen about 3 weeks ago, which brought me down to 3 birds, and now tonight he practically polished off the rest of them. The last Rouen I have is in the pen nursing an injured leg. I'm not sure what is wrong with it. I don't think it's broken, as he can still put a little weight on it when standing still, but he limps terribly. I am told that the dog was carrying the duck by it's body, so it could very well be some very torn muscles and ligaments. I did not find any puncture wounds, and he does not have labored breathing.
I just don't know what to do. We can't afford a vet or the meds it would take to make him better. But I don't know if the "wait and see" method is any better, because I don't want the poor little guy to suffer.
Some of you may disagree with me on this, but I DO know what I'm going to do with the dog. He's done. I can't have something hanging around here killing off our animals. We have a big enough worry with all the coyotes around, I don't want to have to worry about my own dog doing it also. Plus, this was the third time. I was patient the first, even the second time. But three strikes and you're out.
*sigh* I'm just so bummed right now. I LOVED my Rouens, they were the sweetest, funniest birds ever. I still have ducks, but I just picked them up last week. They're year old Khaki Campbells from another farm. They're good ducks, but I didn't raise them and they're very skittish. It's just not the same.
Wow, this is super long every one! Sorry, I just needed to vent. If any one has any ideas on what to do for my injured duck, please let me know! Thank you!

this may sound very mean to the dog but it works trust me... there are two ways to stop ur dog from killing ur feathered friends.. get a kennel or a small pen for the dog and place the birds on top so the birds will poop on him for a few days the dog will learn to hate the smell and not bother the birds... or the other thing u could do is take the dead birds and punish the dog with it... thats what i did to my brittnay dog i use to have he kills a bunch of our kittens and i smacked him with the dead kittens several times he never touched a cat or kitten again. see if that works if not im sorry i tried...

my dog is the same with my chickens, luckily my chickens are enclosed so the dog cant get at them, with the ducks though, my dog (collie cross) tried to pick one of my ducks off, and my drake attacked the dog so pooch no longer goes near the ducks!! personally, id chain the dog up, on a short leash and introduce the ducks to the area, in time, they should get used to each other...
As for the wait and see approach, one of my goslings split his bottom beak in two, and like you, i couldnt afford a vet, but within just two days, the gosling was eating and drinking and fine, though his beak is still very much split, the wait and see thing worked for me. Good luck!!

Keep the duck confined in a warm area with food and water and no other animals. If there are no open wounds, let it swim in lukewarm water to exercise it's leg. They are resilient and if there are no obvious injuries, chances of recovery are good. I had a muscovy hen that stopped walking all of a sudden. It took her 1.5-2 weeks to recover. I don't know what happened (overbreeding maybe) but she literally went from pulling herself along with her wings, to no movement and looking on the verge of death to slowly recovering.

As for the dog, many will probably give you their opinion but it is up to you what you do. Just be sure that if you give him away/take him to a shelter that you are honest and let people know that he has killed your birds. It would be unfair to put someone else in the same position.
I do think it would be best to raise a dog from a puppy around birds. But still, these things do happen. The woman I bought my goslings from told me she doesn't even pen up her birds anymore since aquiring Anatolian shepherds and great pyrenees. She also told me that it is necessary to beat the dog if it does kill a bird while growing up. (don't know if I agree with that)

Anyway, sorry for your loss. Good luck to your duck. Think before a quick reaction about the dog. In the future, make sure your dogs are penned or your birds aren't accessible.

One other thing to consider. You mentioned coyotes in your area. Be sure that your flock is protected if you get rid of the dog, it may have been keeping them away.
