Farewell, I'm Finished

Hotwire. Put a electric wire 6-12" off the bottom of the fence or coop and one on the top. That seems to be the best remedy for stray dog attacks, and most other predators (without wings). I have two wires areound the top and bottom og my day yard which surrounds my night pen. you can get small ones for around 30.00$ and connecters are like 5.00 a bag and you can get a 1/4 mile of wire for about 15.00$--- The only flaw of hotwire is small children. I use to hotwire on standoff connecters on the outside of my perimeter fence to keep stray dogs from testing my fence.
Sorry about your loss. We lost our first pet geese years ago because we only had 2 four foot fences and no night house. It was two raccoons working together. We lost chickens to possums climbing 2 fences and up a ramp into our coop. Now I hotwire for my ducks. I have read about lots of young bears now breaking into coops. Hot wire on the nose would deter them too!!

We lost our first 4 chicks, so I understand what you're feeling. To make matters worse, it was our OWN DOG that did it. Don't give up - we fortified our little tractor and have had hens successfully laying for over a year now.

Never, ever give up unless there's nothing more you can do. Strengthen your defenses and give the dog a good spanking with a BB gun if you catch it near the coop.

Again, I'm really sorry for what happened. There are few things worse than waking up to see a dog having your pets for breakfast.

I too am sad and sickened for your loss. Try not to blame yourself, it sounds like you did all you knew to do. That's all anyone can do. Whither its the loss of pets or children or anything else, it hurts and the healing process isn't easy. But it will hurt less one day.

I am so sorry, I cannot imagine. I am new and so I don't really know a lot.

I know that I have a german shepherd mix that will not let any dog into/near our fence. She will not let my lab near the chicken coop. I wonder if you had a dog in your yard that was trained, you could keep out neighbor dogs?

I had the same thought, what was the coop made of that a dog could chew through it? Are you sure it was not a bear? That has happened to several people I know.

I had a Great Dane that ate through a door. We went to the movies and locked him in the garage, in the 3 hours we were gone he actually ate a hole through the door that connected to the house. But never hurt my chickens, they actually roosted on him while the all took mid-day naps.
