Farm Dog question

Please don't let any dog roam. They get hit by cars, get beat up by other animals, kill other people's chickens, etc.

Do boundry walks with him to learn his new farm. Walk yourself aound about 20 to 50 feet inside the area you want the dog to run and let him do as he wishes, on along line if you think you need one or loose if he has a good recall. If he heads towards the boundry right away turn and go towards the center and call him. Lavish praise when he gets caught up to you. Go back to your walk just inside the line. If ever he crosses the line say no and run off towards the inside calling him up. Go all around each day or twice a day and in no time he will have it down.

I agree, if he becomes a roamer that leaves your property you have to act to contain him, but if he is staying home great!

Have you thought about an invisible fence? We have two big dogs we keep close with one. The systems vary in price, depends on how fancy you want to get. We just got one with a little box, the wire you bury and two electric collars. We were able to "fence" in about 2 acres and it gives them plenty of room to run but keeps them out of trouble and on our property. It took very little time to train them that when the collar beeps, you stop. Neither has been shocked in a long, long time. You just have to make sure you don't let the batteries go dead, some how they always figure it out.

This works for most dogs, not all. Our rottie and shepard mix respect the collar, but our scottie will run right thru the area that the collar will shock him. We even put the stubborn dog collar on him and he STILL would take off. Who'd of thunk such a little dog could handle that kind of shock. Especially when the big dogs won't even push the boundaries?

The hardest part of a system like this is burying the wire. That can take a little time, depending on the size of the area.

This weekend we were outside working all day Saturday and for most of the day Sunday so we had him out with us. He did soooo good, stayed with us for most of the time and when he did venture he didn't go far. I am still planning on kenneling him during the weekdays when we are at work and then keeping him in the garage overnight. He's even starting to grow on DH, so he's all better about him overnighting in the garage. The grandkids came on Sunday and they just LOVED the dog all up, he was sooo sad to see them go but they'll be back!
Thank You all for your responses, I think we've been very blessed to have been "given" this dog and he's already a great addition to our home!

Good for you and lucky for the dog to find a good home!
It's never a good idea to leave dogs out loose when you aren't at home. If for no other reason than he could be blamed for something a stray dog did at a neighbors. If he is kenneled while you are away than you know where he has been.
I forgot to add. A local feedstore has a beautiful, friendly golden. One time while I was in the store the owner had to go to a different building to get a bag of feed for me. As soon as the owner left the building this friendly dog turned very protective. He let out a low warning growl and backed me up against the counter and I had to stand there until the owner returned. As soon as the man did, the dog licked my hand and was all friendly again. Dogs can and do change when their owners are not around. So, it is best to keep them contained when your away.

He's Run Off!! I put him in the kennel Friday before work and came home that evening and he was out in the driveway relaxing. So I checked the kennel and he had wedged the door enough to turn the handle and pop it open. So I turned the handle back and put a tie strap on the door as well to keep it from happening again and put him back in. We went out of town for the night and returned the next morning to the door being shut but he's pulled up the cage part enough at the bottom of it to get out and he was gone!!!!!! The food was still full so I know he must have gotten out Friday night yet and he's not returned yet-Monday! We've only had him for almost 2weeks now so I'm afraid he's wandered too far and won't know where his home is! I've let the Teacher know who brought him to us and she said they'll let us know if he goes back to the farm which is a good 30+ miles from us. I've contacted the local paper to place an ad in the lost/found and contacted the humane society as well. I'm sick, I really had grown quite fond of him and I'm praying he comes back. Hunting season started Saturday so that really worries me alot!!! Please pray for his safe return. Thanks!!!

Sorry if I missed it & you answered the question already, but --Was he neutered?-- That alone will cause a dog to roam. I prefer a chain to a kennel just due to how dogs love to dig, etc.

a dog that isnt neutered (if he's not neutered that is) will roam....they can smell females in heat for very long distances. Either that or hes ran off to try and find his old home.

Goldens do roam, several around here own them (purebreds) and they dash off having a golly ole time, I dont like when any dogs are loose but the only thing good about the goldens around here is they love people and are easy to catch.


Dont let dogs roam bad idea, and illegal anyhow (in most counties/states) they're allowed to roam on your property but once off of it it's illegal. (maybe not in all states but it is in PA and many other states). Leash law.

My dogs only roam my property when im out there with them then again they're house dogs so they're with me all the time.
