Farmer sprayed weed killer on fields now peacock is sick. Need Help.

Ice is doing very good today. His droppings are normal and he is eating. I think he may be over the worse of it. This site is wonderful. Without all the information I got from it I don’t think he would have made it and I am very thankful. I let him out of the big pen today and he went all over just like he always did. I tried to get him back in the pen tonight but he was having nothing of that. He went up on top of the pen then flew way up in his tree. I wish he would go in the pen like his two hen. They go in every night. I had Ice and another hen first. They were free range when my sister bought them for me. I lost the hen to a tornado that came when they were up in the trees. She was blown out and died the next day. His two new hens were always kept in a pen so they go back every night. If they try to go up in the trees I just chase them towards the pen and they go right in. Maybe one day he will start to go in with them at night.

I just wanted to update you about Ice. He is doing great. He seems to be completely ok and is eating normal. He is running around with his hens again not just lying around.
When he sees me on the deck he comes running to get his treats. He is gobbling them up now not just looking at them like he did when sick. I am glad I watch them every day and was able to see he was acting a little off. Still waiting for the farmer to get back to me with what he sprayed. So as long as there are not long term effects he will be good. Only time will tell that.

This is such wonderful news!

Congratulations to you and to Ice.

Hi, i have to say we're farmers. our chicks are still young so they're in a pen for now. the pen is next to our grape vineyard. say 15-20 feet away, we spray weed spray, bug sprays, fertilizer. Our chicks, dog, cats, chickens or cows have never been sick from it. we spray about every week during growing season. unless that guy used something illegal/old, it should not have any effect on anything but weeds or bugs. We are very closely monitored on what we spray and when. We have to report everything we do. and we do not spray if its windy. (not for fear of hurting the animals but because you want the spray which is very expensive on the crop.)

Here's a good picture showing how close our peas are to the vineyard. Rose is only 8 weeks old in this pict. since your pea got better after the medicine (meta whatever - we have chickens too and as a preventative they get that stuff in their water as it says on the bottle) i'd think it had a bacterial infection and not think it was the farmers spray. not that it seems you are blaming, and not that you shouldn't check into it, if he gives you greef he may be spraying something thats old and illegal to use now. (i know ppl that do this - not good). but for the most part most of us follow what we are supposed to do, and our sprays are safe.

Autumnmfisher are right that I am not blaming the farmer. That is why I still don’t know what was used because I never called him to ask what he used. I didn’t want to seem like I was trying to make trouble for him. I ask my brother in law to ask what he used but he never got back to me. I know that they have to spray the fields and there are strict regulations on what they can spray and when. The only reason I said it could have been the spray was Ice got sick the day after they sprayed. None of the other peafowl or chickens got sick just Ice. Ice always has to inspect anything strange in his area. I don’t know if all peacocks are like this but he goes right up to new or strange things to see what they are. The peahens and chickens run into their pens or away from something strange. The fields have been in wilds grasses and flowers for the last 10 years. He has never seen a tractor in his back yard. So I can all most grantee you that he went right down to see what was going on. He might have been too close to them when they sprayed and got some overspray on him. This I will never know because I was not at home when they sprayed. Being that you use spray can you tell me if getting it on birds or eating bugs that had the spray on can make them sick? The reason I posted about the spray was to see if anyone else ever had problems with it and what they did to help because I was scared Ice would die. He was very sick.
