Farmers, guns, and the "old days"

I'm a very definite left-leaning Democrat.

And I don't demonize guns.

And I don't think someone should go to jail because whomever stole their gun committed a crime...UNLESS you were careless and negligent and let some child get to your gun.

I do not keep a gun in my home now because I am a supplemental care-giver for children under foster care, and firearms are prohibited by CPS and court regulations for that.

I'm a pretty redneck country girl myself. Not all conservative are rednecks and not all rednecks are conservatives.

Try not to assume silly sterotypes of me, and I'll try real real hard not to tell you what I think of conservative Republicans right now.

Wow...and they say Republicans and Conservatives are overly sensitive and mean.

I'm sitting here at the computer and just off of my right hand is a 44-40 pistol. As long as I am on my own property I can carry it on my hip. When I go out so does it.

About ten years ago I was down at the barn about 100 yards from the house rumaging around for something and I heard a growl behind me. There was a big black Lab mix that was showing me that he was displeased at me being in my own barn. Luckily he decided not to do anything and left after a few minutes.

Ever since then I carry whenever I'm outside.

I have a Nylon 11 that belonged to my Great Great Aunt. My dad told me numerous predators met their maker to that little rifle. Back then that even included numerous hawks that are free to terrorize our chickens today. The great thing is the Nylon 11 is chambered to take shorts, longs and long rifles. This allows me to throw in a magazine of shorts when I need to be "stealthy".

bnjrob There was a home invasion in the city south of us several years ago. Homeowner was home when the guy busted in. Homeowner told him to leave several times but the bugler advanced upon the home owner and was shot and killed by the home owner. There was just a tiny whisper about the home owner being prosecuted for defending himself but the outrage over that possibilty killed it along with the State law.
Very rare to have a home invasion until meth came out.

Our kids were taught from the time they could walk that guns are not toys. Not an air soft to a BB gun to any gun. My DS can tell me to this day the safety rules I drilled into him from day one concerning guns. So can DD.

herfrds - it is a shame that such things occur. I grew up in a small town where people left things unlocked and when you drove past someone on the road, you waved or at least lifted one finger off the steering wheel in acknowledgement. Times sure have changed.

BTW - I would be happy to eat with you - I'm a RN married to a vet, "colorful" stories are everyday conversation here too

If ever I had to make a choice of foster kids or my guns, keep the foster kids and so something else with um. I'll not give up the only means of protection I have for my family for any organization.

As to teaching our children about sex, drugs, and spirits, I'd say they do quite well with those issues without adult intervention.

I think it's the lack of teaching and letting them learn on their own that's cause the problem there. Pitiful excuse we have for parents these days. But then their grandparents came out of the 60's so we see the problem. Now don't everybody from the sixties get all upset. If the shoe don't fit, I ain't talking bout you. I do praise the Lord for a lot of the children I have seen that have their heads on right.

It's funny that you say that, my mother once said something very similar - and that is her generation! She felt like things seemed to accelerate in a downward spiral with her generation that came of age in the 60s and it has just kept on going down since then. As for me - according to the dates, I am an early Generation X'er, but I don't fit in with many people my own age because of my "old fashioned" values.

Back in '41 the Japanese played havoc on Pearl Harbor. After the war the Japanese generals and admirals were asked why they didn't strike the mainland. Their reply was that America had the largest army, with all it's citizens having weapons and knowing how to use them. They were referring to our 'hunters'. It's a shame we have been forced to not be ready in case some other full hardy country would attack.

That was Admiral Yamamoto. Also the reason our anti gun government is still worried about today and why they want your guns.

; "You cannot invade the mainland United States.
There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass."
- Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto
(Japanese Navy)

In today's world, are we really concerned with defending our shores from invasion? Are the Japanese or British really thinking about invading?
This is a different world than when people carried guns everywhere about the ranch. There are no more banditos, very few wolves and mountain lions to be afraid of.
I'm not saying you don't have a right to own a gun, you do. I'm just saying the old excuses from previous generations don't hold any more.
Get a gun, defend your home, you have that right. Do it responsibly. But don't make excuses about tradition or lifestyle, just admit that you feel safer with a gun in the house or at your hip.
As for me, I will never own a gun. Ever. You are ten times more likely to shoot a family member than an intruder. I hate guns. I believe they are evil, they exist for only one reason: to take a human life. I find that abhorrent. I am also very liberal. That being said, I also believe you have a right to own a gun, for hunting or home defense or even just as a collector. I will fight for you right to own that gun, in the same way I will defend your right to voice your opinion, even if I disagree with it. I will fight for your right to worship as you choose. I expect you to defend my rights just as enthusiastically, even if you disagree with me.
And don't blame Obama, he is not trampling on the Constitution. Bush did that far worse than Obama, ever hear of the Patriot Act?
