Farmers losing hope, suicide up

The man up the road from us grows corn. He sells in on the side of the street and the farmers market. I was commenting to my DS this morning how nice his corn is looking. DS says, "and I care why?" He got an earful, all the way to school. No pune intended!

I agree! What's even worse, people this stupid are given drivers lisences and allowed to have children, lol.

You know it reminds me a button pin my father used to have "Stupid people shouldn't breed."

I don't understand these people's attitude! Like many posters have already said "Where do they think food comes from?!". I also agree with the poster that said we should boycott factory farms and just buy from local farmers markets. I know i try to do that because I know I am getting the freshest food (outside the food I grow myself), but unfortunately most people are more concerned with the bottom dollar. They would rather pay less for old, over-processed food from the grocery store than to pay an extra dollar for farm fresh eggs.

I have saw this type of response (AmaranthArticia) over and over by "city slickers". It is so very sad. They really have no understanding of where their food comes from. A couple of back to back horrible events, when the stores can't get all the goods that Americans have come to expect then maybe some will have to rethink local farms. The city slickers then will be begging for some fresh eggs, milk, vegetable, etc.

I could write a book on this subject because it makes me so angry but I will reframe. Bless the small family farm and pray that they never go away.

Even those who do keep gardens as just hobbies are doing it for a reason! Why do people think its so popular to do now a days? I know people who live int he city and still grow tomatoes and herbs on their balconies or in their windows. Its not more expensive when done right, and its a whole lot healthier!

Its not the backyard hobby farmers that are having hardships...rather its those who farm for a living. If all a person has to live on is their farm and they lose that, its pretty darn devastating. Granted, backyard hobby farmers may be having financial difficulties, but that's usually the reason these gardeners are planting veggie gardens! Seems pretty straight forward to me, but there are some pretty darned stupid people in this world!

I agree, stupid people should not be allowed to breed! Unfortunately, it seems to me that those are the people having the most children!

Couldn't agree more...it's plain ignorance to assume these guys are farming for hobby.

Hmmm..newbie here but this one totally caught my attention. I'm a total farmgirl here. I drive truck, tractor, make my own laundry soap, slop hogs, chickens, raise my kid and all her friends, and still find time to farm. the only thing I still can't do is back the trailer up! LOL!

My "hobby" farm/market makes me $250/month and I work at a hatchery part time too. I am so stinkin mad at these people who think us farmers are idiots. Where do they think their vegetarian menu's come from? I think, that all these punks need a month on a real farm, not like mine, but blood, sweat and tears, 1000 acres plus farm. They'd be the ones with guns to their heads. Bring them in and let them watch where food really comes from. My oh my, that made me really angry. My whole family has farmed. They put kids throug college, we've served our country and this is the thanks we get. On my farmgirl forum I'm FarmGirl #279 and darn proud of it.

And they vote....

all of the hidden laws and bills that are tucked into bigger bills, all of the regulations on us "hobbyists" and the folks who are living their lives the way they wish to (and are allowed to in this country - for now)... makes you wonder what this country is coming to.

When I lived in the big city I worked at a fast food place (Subway subs) and we had people come into that place who very obviously could not boil water to save their lives. I can only imagine what would become of them if they had to feed themselves or their families - they'll be the ones stealing from all those "hobby farmers" to get food.

Guess we won't be so "disposable" then, eh?
