Farmers losing hope, suicide up

Actually, that deal in Colorado violates the property laws that I own my land to the center of the earth and into the infinity of outer space, all air rights as well as subsurface/ mineral rights (unless those were sold separately); it's called fee simple. Whatever water falls from the sky into my rain barrel is mine, by my property rights. That's what real estate is. I'm no lawyer, but I did go to real estate school and practiced for more years than I'd like to remember. But, that isn't the issue here on the thread. It's sad what's happening to farmers in this country in so many ways.

So terribly terribly sad, unfortunately I think we shall hear of the same thing happening here to our farmers also. As the wife of a farmer we ourselves along with hundreds of other farmers received devasting (to us) news on Wednesday afternoon (via Email!)

The Dairy Farmers of Britian Milk Board - went into liquidation, "all milk collected up to and including 3pm on June 3rd 09 will NOT be paid for"

We have lost the revenue for 6 weeks worth of milk, they had also been dropping the price they pay farmers for their milk steadily since January (we get paid 17p (17cents) a litre ....... not a lot considering the consumer here pays £1.53 for two litres.......

The whole thing regarding farmers in this country stinks, we are also considered the "stupid" minority people forget it is the farmers who make this countryside what it is.....

My husband is 64 years young this year, just how long do we have to carry on working our 18 hours a day in order to survive and feed this country, to care for the animals and the countryside of Great Britian.

My husband's philosphy ..... " come on, we just keep going" we have been there before and we can get through it all again......

So to the city slicker who thinks we are "idiots" playing on expensive machinery that we have to get ourselves into debt for in order to work the land to feed people with your attitude........ STARVE - feel real hunger - one day you will - but guess what, WE shall survive - for WE are farmers the stalwart carers of the Land
and WE know how to feed ourselves! ...........

Good Morning all.

I have read your thread with sadness that you are also experiencing the same situation in the US, and shock at the response of some people in the article you have all read. This respondent is obviously brain dead. But I find this attitude here in the UK as well.

I wonder if they will eat their keyboards when the farmers are finally all gone. Here in the UK farmers are one of the biggest concern groups for suicide. Just by their lifestyle they are often left alone with negative thoughts and feel bullied by "the system". I have also watched when discussions have been going on between health professionals as people have made similar comments. e.g. "Why would farmers be at risk? All that good weather and all the lovely animals and freedom."

As for the water, it is also the same here and I remember an incident here. Locally we have lots of small hill farms and a lot of rain (that is an understatement of course, I am in Wales), one of the farmers here at the top of a very steep hill had been in dispute with the Water authority about their service for some time and in total frustration he spent a large amount of money digging an artesian well. What followed was a lengthy court battle and the result was that water that fell from the sky onto his land did not belong to him, it belongs to the state. The water authority took over his well and he had to pay them for supply.

It is a great sadness that the reality of many people's lives is not recognised and the pressures they face are not understood. Instead of the great advances in technology bringing people together, it seems to have in fact driven us all into little pockets of people with no engagement with others. We are driven headlong by television and the media to take on a particular mindset, and young people are frequently persuaded (but not exclusively) that they should adopt these new attitudes and as the education system has been eroded singlemindedness and independent thought are no longer a threat to the staus quo, and the people who suffer are those affected by the politics and economy of the time. But the new "IN CROWD" who have the right attitude and fit in with the masses will not even give it a second thought as they have wasted all of their mental energy chasing an illusion of success and riches.

Because of their solitary style in fact farmers are far closer to reality than all of the city dwellers, and they are closer to the natural rythms of the earth, their world is the true reality, and the city life is in fact the CON in this world.

God help them all and us if they are finally defeated in their lifelong struggle to feed us all. WE are all here trying to become farmers on a small scale in some instances. God help us too.

LOL..... Now that is a job for isolation. I think we need a committee.

But I also think we need to get back closer to the earth and the people and values that mean something.

Yoiur so right Jena, that is why you will be perfect for the jobm and I will consider it a pleasure to be on your committee........ out Gordon brown..... jena and Engilish Chick are on the rise...

when do we go out campaigning for the good of the land and that everyone MUST have a chicken or two......

lol.... that would be fun,

I am sure we could talk for Britain anyway, I do know that I have been through the worst possible winter and if it had not been for the chickens making me laugh sometimes I don't know how I would have made it through. My buddies here on BYC and the creatures of my garden have been the best support possible.

Many many times family and friends here and "the system" have been powerless give me any answers or assistance. But the unconditional regard of "Chicken people" has been superb.

Bit I think we need the strength of a Highlander to take the lead.

Where is she today? But yes the first law should be a few chickens in each garden.

There are 2 sides to every coin.

NO, really it doesn't. ALL Ground water is controlled by the EPA, reagrdless of where you live in the US. The EPA hands over the regulation of it to the states because they can't afford to do it themselves. We are ALWAYS fighing with the EPA as to what constitues "waters of the state" and "waters of the US". In fact, half of the Colorado water division thinks "waters of the US" is one thing and half think it is another.

But one thing I am certain of - NO ONE owns any water in the US. You might own the rights to USE it, but that's it. If a river runs through your property you have absolutely no ownership of any water that flows past your place. If you dig a ditch and rain water collects there you will get a big fat fine for having an "illegal impoundment." If you own a pond or lake, then you're pretty safe. Unless of course, the government thinks they need that water. Then you are SOL.

Do ya feel a little bit like freedom has gotten away from us yet?

Oh and the rain barrel thing, it might be illegal, but no one is checking. I have been thinking of getting some myself...
