Is it normal for the father to "nip" at the ducklings? Not often but a few times I've caught the father of our new ducklings nip at them.

Yes, so do other flock members do be cautious drakes are known baby killers, i am fortunate i have not had that here but i always watch.

Yes, very normal in the wild as well, but rarely goes beyond a nip. I agree, keep an eye on him because they can kill the babies or seriously harm them. I once saw a domestic duck that was so bent on mating with a female with a little baby that when he couldn't get to her, he seriously attacked her baby. If it's possible, you might consider separating them.
