A couple of days ago my partner found an almost fully formed chick in the nest box.(not alive) No shell, only the chick, we have No rooster. This was not from a broody hen, it was just 'hatched' that day. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Other than virgin birth or a traveling salesman - nope.

The eggs were collected 2 hours earlier, the embryo when found was still moist, so quite freshly laid.

That's weird. Sometimes if an egg gets left in the nest for several days the hen that layed it might sit on it a little while and then another hen will sit on and that'll just happen until it hatches or is cracked accidentally I've had that happen several times but my chicks lived.
