faverolle questions

So I fell in love with the look of the aracana with the fluffy beard & tufts and saw a recommendation for the faverolle also. I currently have 2 chickens .. a california white and a barred rock in a 15X6 (aprox) size pen...covered dog run. I still want to get an aracana (for the green eggs) but wondering now about the faverolle as far as egg size. Are they comparable in size to the ones I'm getting now from my california & barred rock? I'm thinking in terms of "what you'd buy in a grocery store" size....I don't want a bird that doesn't make an egg worth collecting to eat if they are too small. And what color are they? Same as the barred rock or lighter? anyone have pics? Thanks.

Araucanas in the USA do not have beards and muffs, they are a disqualification. They also should not lay green eggs but blue eggs. Here is an Araucana website where you can read more about the breed.

favs come in bantam and standard. i have raised the bantams in the past and their eggs r about a small to medium sized egg. usually takes 2 of them to make a good eggie sandmich,lol.

if u want them for the eggs i'd say u want to get standard sized as they would be closer in size eggs to what u have now. mine were always about the size of my duccles eggs but a touch bigger and a little rounder and my silkie eggs r pretty close but favs were always a rounder egg so i could always tell who laid them. so they r about half the size of what u r getting now from the breeds u mentioned.

favs r an awesome breed and very friendly u will love them if u get them. and i believe u r refering to EE= easter eggers or americanas who have tails not the rumpless araucanas if i'm not mistaken but i can't remember which lays green eggs.

Faverolles lay a cream colored eggs. The Standard birds will lay large eggs but I doubt you will see extra large or Jumbo eggs from them. Like mentioned they have exceptional personality and the roosters are awesome if you were wanting to keep a rooster. They are a dual purpose bird so the body is more meaty. Dual purpose birds do not typically lay really large eggs but Faverolles are excellent winter layers. Mine never missed many days during the summer or winter.

My EE lays the biggest eggs of my bunch ~ larger than the Australorp, Barred Rock, and Faverolles. A lot depends on the line ~ maybe more so than the breed itself in some cases!

That said, I do not think a Faverolles will be happy in a mixed flock where she is the only one of her breed. They are very shy, and are nearly guaranteed to be the Omega hen of a mixed flock that includes the two breeds you already have. There can be feather picking issues as well, when you have clean-legged breeds in with feather feet. Just my two cents.

You might seek out someone in your area with EEs that lay big old honkin' eggs. Those hens will most likely be hardy, rough-and-tumble girls that will fit into a new situation well. If you bring in two at once, they will have a buddy and may ease into the pecking order better. Good luck!

The EE she brought in was too aggressive for her existing hens. That was why I suggested Faverolles as a possible alternative. I don't think her hens have very dominant personalities. At least, not compared to that EE.

The EE I originally brought home last week (causing my earlier dilema) was returned and actually turned out to be a sexlink (don't know how you spell that) but was grabbed by mistake since it looked similar in color and caught at night. I still want to get the aracana AND a faverolle but will get much younger ones that won't immediately try to take over my other girl's territory. Since they are coming from my neighbor I guess it's easy enough to just give them back if they don't work out. Thanks for everyone's advise...I'm hoping to get them today. They'll be about 1/2 grown in size so not quite laying yet but large enough to not fit thru the wire in my coop. I am really enjoying getting into the chicken hobby so am still in the "learning mode"......great to have this site to check out. =0) For the size of my coop I'm thinking 4 is the max I want in there (they also share it with 5 bunny ladies that all get along fine) and I dont' want to be overloaded on eggs since we don't eat them every day....I would just like the variety in colors (both in chickens & eggs). How fun is this?...lol
