What are your favorite backyard chicken/small farm chicken/raising chicken books? I am a *bit* obsessive about things and have been reading everything I can get my hands on lately, but am always looking for new recommendations. So far, my hands down favorite book has been "Chick Days".

My favorite poultry books date from the forties and fifties and have been out of print for decades so have to be sought from out-of-print book dealers.

But of the stuff that is still in print and is for beginners I really liked Chickens In Your Backyard. It's an older book now and with a different cover than my original copy, but still pretty good for the folks that are just getting into it.

While not limited to just poultry I highly recommend getting Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living to go along with it.

Between those two a person would be able to handle most anything.

My favorite, hands down, is City Chicks by Patricia Foreman. In it she tells you everything you need to know to grow peeps from hatch to laying hens. Then, she tells you more stuff you don't HAVE to know, but is great fun to learn about chickens, like chicken tricks. She is also the author (with her husband, Andy Lee) of Chicken Tractor, Day Range Poultry, Backyard Market Gardening and more.

I am lucky in that I belong to a poultry club organized by Pat Foreman, so I can ask questions directly to her, but I still want to have the books on hand when I need to look something up right away.
