I'm currently in the process of building a duck coop. The one I am making is substantly bigger than where they are at now. (Will be 7x12, I have 6 ducks and I plan on getting more.) I currently use pine shavings and I clean it out daily. If I use that in the next coop then it will cost a lot of money to keep up with it. What are your suggestions?

Deep litter hasn't worked that well for me with ducks. Their webbed feet mat it down really quickly and they don't scratch and fluff it like chickens will. I have my ducks and chickens together and even with the chickens it gets matted down quickly. I have to encourage them to scratch or take my pitchfork and fluff it myself every week or so.

Still I do use this method. I try to incorporate larger wood chips and small branches that don't mat down as quickly. I also use wood shavings and fine chips. Straw in the winter because it's a better insulator. I don't like that straw is slick and not very absorbent though. So I always try to mix in wood shaving because I like how they absorb the moisture from the wetter, runnier duck crap.
