Our favortite, and most friendly chicken, got suddenly sick overnight, she is just 3 months old and was doing fantastic until this past Saturday into Sunday. She is really lathargic and wont hardly move on her own. Wont eat or drink. So I went to the medicine route and got the water changed out and mixed up a batch of amrpolium per the instructions, 1 tsp per gallon. She wont drink so I gently put her beek in the water a few dozen time to make sure she got some in her system. We have 6 chickens total so I was told I had to make sure the rest drink this solution as well.
So being this is our first time having a sick, or what seems to be a sick youngster, am I doing the right thing and how long does it usually take to see signs of improvement.
Mom is really worried and I am as well. Our little girl is being kept out of the loop thus far but I hope she gets better really soon.
Thank you for all your help.

Hi there,
Sorry to hear about your situation! It's hard to know exactly what's going on with your chick, but I think I would keep on the antibiotic. I don't know about the weather where you live, but we're in the South, so occasionally when it's really hot a hen will start to get sick and not get up to go to the waterer, and if I've been busy and haven't noticed what's going on she can get really dehydrated quickly. So if you think that could be part of it, I would keep encouraging her to drink any way you can. I also gave some Gatorade to mine, and went back and forth between that and the water w/ antibiotic for the first day. If she still isn't eating tomorrow, maybe you could tempt her with some good quality (non chicken-flavor) soft cat food. Or else sometimes it helps to mix their food with a little bit of water or give them some cooked oatmeal. I'm assuming you have isolated the sick one from the rest.

One of my girls fell sick about 3 days ago, and today I'm definitely seeing some improvement, just to give you an idea of when you might see improvement, of course if will depend on your situation. Other times it has taken only a couple of days for them to get back on their feet. I'm hoping for the best for you and your family! My kids are always really concerned and have had to go through a few losses, but overall it has been a great experience for them to have chickens.
Best wishes,
Erin

Dosage for Corid liquid is 2 tsp per gallon of water. Dosage for Corid powder is 1/2 tsp per gallon of water. Treat all chicks for 5 days,do not give vitamins during treatment(interferes with medication) give vitamins after treatment. Make sure medicated water,is the only water they drink. If she is drinking the medicated water, and she has Coccidiosis, you should notice an improvement within approx. 24 hours. Also do chicks have grit?
