This morning when I came to feed the chickens, I noticed that my biggest fan (Mabel) was crouching on the floor, looking tired and almost hurt. This was very strange because she is always the most antsy to see me and is trying to jump on me once I get in the run. I took a look at her and nothing seemed strange, no bleeding, bone breaks, bumble foot, clogged vent or splayed leg. She was very mellow when I was inspecting her, more than usual. I'll attach a video of how she walks, it's kind of like a crawl/hobble. I had a chicken a couple months ago who would hobble around like this, and ended up getting sick and dying, however she died in May so i'd be surprised if Mabel got it from her.

Some background info that might've caused this:
- it's pretty hot right now, around 95º per day.
- my chickens have had stick-tight fleas for a while, she's got them pretty bad (i'll attach pic)
- she had a small case of what looked like bumblefoot around a month ago, however I was pretty sure I had cured it because her feet look fine now. (pic added)
- she hadn't layed an egg yesterday or today and she usually lays once a day (her vent looks fine though)
- she hasn't pooped from what i've seen today (i've had her for over an hour)
- Looked like she might have a bump under her head feathers but it was hard to tell (pic added)

Other info:
- she's eating and drinking fine, also no slowness or off aim when pecking
- she's awake, just seems like she doesn't want to move (vid added)
- she's been separated from the others and is under my watch
- no discoloration, runny eyes/nose or strange breathing
- fed her some scrambled egg

Sorry the pics are a little out of order

Update: She pooped! and it looks healthy i'll attach a pic

She seems very weak and her face is quite pale. Did you check the coop for poultry mites or fleas?
Her face actually doesn't seem too pale to me, it looks actually more colorful than usual. And yes she does have stick-tight fleas if you look at the image I attached in the beginning post.

Yes, I can see these fleas also in the latest pictures. She needs to be treated to get rid of these pests as they not only cause anaemia but also transmit quite a multitude of diseases.

What kind of bedding do you use?

I use this, it's supposed to be good for preventing bugs. Do you have any recommendations to get rid of the bugs?

I'm so sorry your girl isn't doing well!

I think permethrin will kill stick tight fleas. You can spray it directly on your chickens. You will have to clean out everything, spray down your coop, nest boxes, roosts, everything. And you'll probably gave to repeat it. I'm not sure about the re-treatment time for stick tight fleas, though.

Is it possible she's egg bound? Have you checked for an egg?
I felt around, it didn't feel like there were any eggs in there. I think it's the bugs, thank you for the recommendation. I need something really strong, will that be good? My situation is so frustrating, their coop is falling apart and ground squirrels live in their run. It was definitely the ground squirrels that gave my birds bugs. Luckily we have to move for a little to somewhere with its own coop, so hopefully we can get rid of the bugs then. UGH! This is so frustrating, we've tried so hard to get rid of the ground squirrels.

That sounds terribly frustrating.

But yes, permethrin is strong! It is what I've used for poultry lice, and it is in dog flea meds and other such treatments. Just be aware that it is toxic to cats! When I use it, I immediately wash my clothes and shower because I have 3 cats. It's safe for dogs and people, though, when used properly.

Thank you so much! Could you actually give me the name of the one you've used? I just want to make sure I get it right because theres so many options when I google it. One last question, do you think it's safe to put her with the others? My mom doesn't want her in the house but i'm worried she'll get the others sick.
