Favorite goat breed and why

Boer goats. In my honest opinion, they are the most superior breed of goat in existence overall. They have high feed conversion ratios, great meat production and quality, easy kidding, good mothers, hardy/adaptable, are one of the most profitable breeds, and can be used for a variety of applications, including market animals, show animals, pack goats, even draft animals.

The only aspect they are beaten on is milk production, which is why I said OVERALL.

The more I read about boers the more I like them and seems a lot of other people do too :)

I wouldn't keep any other breed :)

What are you looking for in a goat?

Mostly just pets and brush clearers honestly. I guess basically anything would fit that

something fairly friendly and not too loud. Possibly even something I could teach to walk and take on walks.

I'm still not 100% sure if I want wethers or does or both. A while ago when I first wanted them I thought well does for milk duh but then for a while I've been thinking I don't want does because I don't want to have to remember to milk them and plus I am not sure what we would do with the milk. I'm sure it's delicious but we probably wouldn't drink/eat it all and idk how to make anything out of it like cheese or whatever. So I guess I still don't really want them. But then now recently I've been thinking it might be kind of nice to have a doe and/or that the animal would actually have a purpose and pay rent hahah still not sure on that one.

But yeah, basically just friendly pet and brush clearer and maybe if I decide i do want the milk.

Also, what's the difference between the butterfats and why are some people so into high butterfat?

Well... I have Nigerian dwarf goats (look at my avatar) and they have very sweet personalities! They also eat brush like monsters

Butterfat is what makes the milk creamy and sweet... ND goats have a 10-12% butterfat content, so their milk is VERY sweet and creamy, kinda like drinking half and half

They're adorable too! That's good they eat brush :)

And ahhh okay, that makes sense. Thanks! Okay so stupid question, what is the percentages of cow milk you buy in the store? Like 1%, 2%, skim, whole, etc.? Is that the same as butter fat or something completely different?

here is a list of butterfat content in "store milk"

United States
Butterfat content U.S. terminology
3.25% Whole milk or regular milk
about 2% 2% milk or reduced fat milk
about 1% 1% milk or low fat milk
0–0.5% Skim milk or nonfat milk

I think we have had this discussion before. Boers will fit the bill of being pets and brush clearers. So will most larger dairy breeds, such as Saanens, Nubians, Alpines, Toggenburgs, and LaManchas. Pretty much all breeds of goats will be just fine pets and brush clearers, those are important yet very basic requiremenrs as far as goats go. The reason I was talking up boers so much is because they go above and beyond the basic "perks" of goats. It depends on your preferences honestly. Friendly? That depends on the individual goat. Quiet? That depends on the individual goat as well, with some exceptions being that Nubians are infamously loud. LaManchas and Oberhaslis are known for being calm and quiet and friendly. I can tell you from personal experiences that the personality of Boers could best be described as well mannered, calm, quiet, respectful, yet not overly friendly. All goats can be walked on a leash if trained.

Wethers serve no purpose outside of being pets. Does can be pets, and if they are needed, can be breeding animals or milking animals, or all of the above. If you are not yet sure about your intentions, does would be safe bets.

Butterfat is basically how rich the milk tastes. The higher the butterfat, the richer the taste. Nigerians have the highest butterfat.
