Looking to add some white eggs to our production. What are your favorite breeds and why?

We have 12 hens:

3 barred rock
2 buff Orpington
2 Black copper Maran
2 Ameraucana
1 red star
1 Easter egger
1 cream legbar

So we get around 6 brown eggs and 3 blue each day. Will add maybe four white layers.

Hands down, my favorite white egg layers are California Greys.

Awesome layers of large white eggs, longer than the battery commercial Leghorn, good tempered, not as flighty as Leghorns but as prolific.

They have more of the Barred Rock temperament. I have really enjoyed having them in my flock.

You can often get them at the feed store as Production Blacks, but they are barred birds looking very similar to Barred Rocks only white ear lobed and lay a white egg.

My 2 cents.

You can’t go wrong with White Leghorns. The best white egg layer out there. I absolutely love Leghorns. There are so many different colors to choose from; White, Light Brown, Dark Brown, Exchequer, Isabella, Black, the list goes on. Get them as chicks and handle them often and they will love you!

My only hesitation about these is that I’ve heard the lighter birds are easier for hawks to pick off. Idk how true this is, but the only bird I’ve ever had taken by a hawk was an almost all white ameraucana.

If you’re concerned about the White Leghorns then get Light or Dark Brown Leghorns or get a few of each and see which color does better white or brown.

I have 8 White Leghorns, and I have 23 acres of land that they free range on all day.
We have hawks, owls, coyotes, skunks, raccoons, opossums, stray dogs, bob cats, etc.
A coyote came close to killing one of my White Leghorn girls once, but she was quick enough to escape. They are very quick and are very smart when predators are concerned.
If you still want a breed with more camouflage, though, Brown Leghorns are a good choice :)
