Hey, all. I was wondering if there's any Fayoumi breeders here on BYC. I know Fayoumis have been talked about here on the Forum, but I don't remember seeing any breeders' names.

I was wanting to know if anyone has any birds for sale in the summer of next year, and I also have a few questions for anyone who may know the answers:

1. Are hatchery strains of Fayoumis pure?
2. What is the #1 source of good Fayoumis here in the USA?
3. Do Fayoumis go broody often?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out!

Well, I can answer 2 of your questions.
1) Probably not. Most hatchery Fayoumi's are poor strains sometimes crossed with the ever-similar campine because it's sometimes tricky to tell the difference.
3) Yes the hens are good broody's. How else would they have survived existing feral in ancient egypt for 4,000 years (Yeah, that's right. Moses even raised this breed

Well, I dunno about that...)
I hear Fays are a darn good breed, maybe not cold hardy but they existed for millenia carrying the traits we talked about on the Breed Stewards thread. But like I said, the breed is degrading fast. Like the Swedish Landrace duck, and many others, the breeders of this breed are slipping away from the breed's original purpose: To survive, and still have lot's of eggs to show for it....

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that there is at least one Fayoumi breeder on BYC... me!

And to answer you 3 questions.

1) I agree with Ducks and Banny Hens, hatcheries probably have polluted strains. The line I have comes from imported stock from an Egyptian Family.

2)Good source? I think mine are pretty great (not to toot my own horn).

3)Have 2 hunkering down in the nesting boxes as we speak...

And boy do they lay a lot of eggs....

Here's a pick of one of our roos.

I was looking for fayoumi chicks online and found someone advertizing "golden penciled fayoumi"..... as far as I know there is no such thing, am I wrong?? I have a campine (goes by the name of speedy), and she is quite similar in build and type.

My fayoumi rooster came from Mc Murray hatchery but he seems to look pretty good... I was thinking that it might be good to get a couple of fayomi hens to match, so i was looking for a good source.
