Anyone have any advice helping hens get over weird fears? I have this old stump that was getting all soft and full of holes, so I figured I'd throw it in for the hens to tear apart. You know, some entertainment. Day four, and they have still not left the coop to investigate. The most they'll do is stick their heads out apprehensively then go back inside.
Its a stump, girls. Not a small tiger.
I'd really rather it shredded, as it's pretty ugly. And I know the'd go to town on it... if they gave it a chance. I've already tried forcing them out of the coop into the run. Its a no-go. They just launch back inside like the ground is lava.

I feel your frustration...I have 4 BA chicks, now almost 3 weeks old, and I put in a bottle nipple waterer so I could get rid of the regular quart-sized waterer because of the mess it makes. I've put their beaks on it, reached in and showed them "there's water in there!", etc., But they will have NOTHING to do with it..it freaks them out! LOL Once I put a small sprig of millet in there to give them something to 'play' with....totally spooked them, wouldn't go NEAR it....weird little chickies.....
