Welcome to BYC! :frow

Is it holding the feather in it's beak or is the feather growing outta the beak?

Yes, it's possible for a random feather to grow where is maybe not idea.. On the side that's not extra fluffy.. you can still see the small feathers growing real close to the nares (nostrils) extending somewhat down the beak.

Pics are tricky sometimes.. Is it an optical illusion that that's a loose feather base extending down toward your forefinger coming outta the beak.. and the fluffy part coming out the other side?

Thanks! It’s growing out of it’s beak. Here’s another angle. Definitely attached and has been since it hatched yesterday.

I really hope it doesn't become "a thing", and that somebody doesn't decide to make a breed out of something like this and make chickens even more visually impaired than the current mutants... Silkies, Polish and the rest of them weren't supposed to have feathers like that either (or all the feather-footed breeds for that matter) but here we are. You may need to trim that as the chick gets older and more feathered out, if it starts to get in the way of its vision.
