I have a 8 month old mixed breed banty rooster with feathers coming off his feet. Have had him for 5 months. Last week noticed a problem on the leg, near the feet, he has what seems to be skin instead of scales, and it is red and translucent. Can't see any skin breaks. Looks painful, like the feather shafts are popping through the skin. and on his hocks, his skin is very very red. I've put bag balm on it for a week but no progress. Any ideas?
I'm pretty sure he had scales in this area before, as I have treated him for scaly leg mites. I don't remember the feathers in this particular spot - seems like they might be sprouting where they weren't before? maybe a maturity thing?
