We have 16 girls that are 8months old. Several breeds are involved in our dilemma and so not all of them are dark feathered. (Note our WLH & BO are not affected at all) Three months ago (December timeframe) about 6 of our girls developed bare spots at the bases of the tails spreading up. There are no signs of mites or parasites. We have put the blue-kote on the bare areas just in case it was pecking but has had no effect at all. One girl (dark one in the attached picture) has been consistently red but we have never seen any feather pulling or unusual pecking. I realise that there was supposed to be a molt but as it has been so very cold here we have been running a heat lamp from dusk to dawn which lights and takes the edge off of the coldness in the coop. They are free feeding, free range, have electrolytes in their water 3 days a week, are laying well despite the MA weather. Their feed is Blue Seal crumbles and pellets plus scratch and fresh veggies etc., Does anyone have any clues to help us?? Attaching pictures - thank you so much fellow chicken mama's and papa's!
