Hey all!
Been using this site as a great resource for months now but finally breaking in because I can't find any answers on a recent conundrum.
A few days ago I noticed on of my 8 month old Golden Buff hens had very little down feathers around the vent and under the belly. There appeared to be a scab three days ago two inches down from the vent and I checked today and it appears to be peeling off and healing. There is some fresh blood just above the vent today though. New feathers are growing in those areas. All other birds appeared normal three days ago and just today I checked and now a Black Astralourp that was fully feathered is missing a section of feathers two or so inches down from the vent and the appear to be in the run. Eating is normal, egg laying is excellent and energy seems normal. Still loves to forage and run around the yard.
Some black poop in the coop and in the run and no treatment so far.
I have scoured the coop and hens for mites several times now and no signs at night or crawling around vent or at the base of the wing and tail feathers. All that appears normal. One picture of the golden buff shows the vent and it just looks like poop around there and some scabbing right above the vent.
I wonder if there is pecking going and just winter boredom on or if we're dealing with a parasite. One thing though, sometimes they do roost next to each other but turned different ways. So one will have her head by the others tail.
Deep litter method in the coop about 6 months in and I stir it weekly. Plenty of ventilation and all fresh smells.
No clue what is going. Any advice welcome. Thanks so much!
