This is Carolina. Her bald patch appeared shortly after we got her last September. At first we thought it was stress from the move, then that she was possibly molting (two of our five were). The spot has only gotten larger and redder, however.

We have checked MULTIPLE times for parasites, and the fact that NONE of the other girls are sporting the same symptoms leads us to believe that either she or one of the other girls are removing her feathers for her. In fact, a couple of weeks ago I noticed some feathers coming through the pin feather shafts and thought maybe we were done. But no, they were gone within a couple of days. You can see in the photo (if you zoom in) that there are more of these coming... I have, however, never seen any of them picking at themselves or each other, so this perplexes me as well.

As far as protein goes, she gets 20% layer feed and a meal worm treat about once a week. They free range in a small area (approx 200 square feet) and with all the rain lately are geeing quite a bit of their share of slugs, earthworms and cutworms. I can certainly boost her protein some more, but is this what she needs? Is there a topical solution that I might try on her neck? Bag balm? Or I have a natural balm (ingredients: calendula, apricot, almond, coconut, vitamin E and jojoba oils, beeswax, mango butter, Shea butter, zinc oxide, grapefruit seed extract and lavender and vanilla essential oils. It works wonders on human rashes and bug bites. I wonder if she's itchy and picking at her feathers because of that?

YES troubling, annoying... And I am no help.

I have a couple of hens where I have had that trouble. I even put the problem lady into my empty vegetable garden for MONTHS, with only a few other chickens, so that she would have LOTS of space and no high population pressure and lots of dirt to play in and little weeds to dig up..... I tried high protein feed

Etc

Etc

Etc

It didn't work....

Mine started because she got a bare back from the rooster, and I bought a large saddle for her... The saddle came with an elastic strap that went around her neck.. It was comfy looking, not tight... But she started to pick at the feathers neck to the neck elastic, and while picking at that elastic strap learned how lovely and fun it as to eat feathers.

So...

Take home message...

Be super creative as to how to cover that area so that she can not reach it ( maybe a sock? But how would you keep it up? Duct tape?) or just live with it.

:hit I just wrote a long response... And the cyberspace ate it

Ok.... :hit I will try again... Hack, hack, wheeze

I have had the same problem... The feather eating became a habit that I could NOT break. I tried everything, even putting her with only a few other companions, for MONTHS in my super large vegetable garden while on high protein feed.

Either figure out a way to hide the spot (maybe a sock duct taped in place.... But then she might start eating the feathers on the edges of the duct tape) or decide you will always have one ugly chicken (with the worry that she will teach other chickens the same bad habit... Or start chewing on the fathers of your other chickens) or eat her.... Or sell her.
