feather picking?

I'm not so sure that feather picking is my issue really, but I don't know what else it could be. I have a barred rock pullet (Speckle Hen), just under a year old. Completely healthy other than her hind end is missing some fluff. She's eating, drinking, laying, active, etc. The area is the fluff on her hind end, but only to the sides, not right down the middle under the vent. At first I just noticed that when the wind blew her tail up and fluff around I could see red skin showing, but didn't pay it much mind. Now it's a couple weeks later and she's no better, in fact the area is quite red and warm to the touch. I couldn't feel anything under the skin, no inflamed organs or anything. Not eggbound since she's still laying. I thought maybe she was picking the feathers because something was hurting back there... but thinking like a chicken doesn't always work out right. Any ideas? I know the photo's not great, but here's her backside. At the feather 'pores' you can see what looks like the shaft of the feather still in there, or maybe it's a new feather coming out. Either way, it's not smooth skin but is definitely red and warm. I haven't seen her or anybody else picking at the area, she's rather high in the pecking order (in fact, one of my other hens has a beak mark freshly chomped out of her comb, I wouldn't put it past Speckle Hen to have been by her).

Nobody??
If it is feather picking, would they pull out the whole feather, shaft and all? Will they continue to pick as the new feathers grow in, leaving stubble? Would it be hot and red skin, or just bald?
Anybody?? I lost my other favorite hen recently, and Speckle is the other 'favorite' I have now, I really don't want to loose her over something I watch get worse and can't help.

I'm bumping you. I'm interested in any answers you get. One of my BR's is red like that, but her bald spots look different. I thought all my hens were molting, but I'm not sure. They look terrible.

I had the same problem with my ducks and geese. I Tried everything, called vets, treated for mites and lice and changed bedding daily. Then one night i came home late and caught one goose red handed ripping out feathers. I would watch closely. The affected area on yours looks a lot like my ducks did. And the goose did it while they were sleeping so they had no chance to defend themselves at first.

Yes, that looks like picking.
If they are drawing blood, separate the bird(s) being picked upon until their feathers grow back. Otherwise, try Vick's Vapor Rub or BluKote - some people have had luck with those. You can search them up on the top bar there. What really worked for us was a duct tape covering for the bare patch (the patch was just above the tail on the back, and quite serious). Not very pretty, but it worked when nothing else did. Other people use blinders or "peepers" but I have no experience with those so I can't vouch for that.
If there is just one chicken doing the picking, I strongly recommend you rehome or cull it. It is a learned behavior and once it is started it is almost impossible to cure and will spread throughout your flock.
Feather picking is usually caused by boredom or lack of calcium. Make sure they have plenty of free-access oyster shell or other calcium supplement, and let them out to free range whenever possible {if this is possible for your area}. Also be sure to let them out of their coop as early as is humanly possible in the morning.
Hope that helped.

I just re-homed 6 more chickens because of feather picking! I have 8 chickens left now and they all have bare bottoms, I'm hoping the ones I re-homed who were peck free were the culprits! I sprayed all mine with blu-kote just last night and am praying that takes care of the problem! It is terrible to look out and not see their fluffy bottoms!! I feel terrible for them!

Forgot to mention, if it is just the one, then separate her/him until their feathers come back.

I opted to use burt's bees res-Q ointment and lanolin on the area and it has calmed down a lot, no longer as red or hot. I think it is her that is picking at the area, I see her 'groom' back there sometimes but not actually pull out feathers, but the way the area is picked at leaves right where she would have a hard time reaching still fluffy. My black sex-link has some picking too now
