So I have a chicken being weird about her feathers. My GLW pullet started laying in early Jan, she was hatched 8/4/10 according to the guy I got her from. I had noticed that when my SLW pullets started laying in Dec they lost some of their feathers on their back in front of their tails leaving just the fuzzy. So when the GLW did it I didn't think too much of it. Well the GLW has gone too far. She is bald on her back now. She is a good daily layer where as my SLW are everyother day. She just doesn't have a good body compared to my SLW. Any ideas on how to get this to stop? Here are pictures. None of the other breeds I have are doing this. So I don't think its bugs but I will go out & look closer (I forgot to look at legs). Its hard to see but the white on the back of the GLW is skin. Oh yeah, no roo's.

Looks like roo damage, but you say no roo, so I wonder if you might have a hen who is trying to take the place of a roo. Ever see one of your hens climb on the back of another, as if to mate? Maybe try to make a feeble crowing sound? Since they are just now maturing, I also wonder if you might actually have a roo you haven't identified yet. The other possibility is feather picking, as you suggested. Any way you can spend some time watching them and seeing what is going on?

The only problem with me standing out there is they don't do it when I'm out there. They stand at the door asking to be let out in the yard, they are good at cleaning up our back yard, no mowing required this winter lol. They don't go about doing their thing when I'm there. I do have some noisy hen's when it comes to laying eggs or talking to me when I step out the door but I have been on BYC making sure I didn't have any roos as they grew up. My Cuckoo Marans had me the most worried because of the big crowns but we have no saddle feathers & today I got 11 eggs out of 13 chickens. Getting pretty close to all laying. I'm not sure but I think its my 2 EE's that aren't laying yet & I know for sure due to coloring they aren't roos.

If another chicken is doing this it must be at night in the roost area where its closer quarters.
