Curious about feather sexing day olds. What breeds can be feather sexed successfully. I have heard about late feathering and early feathering genes (is this right?). But does that refer to the breeds that are crossed, pure, please elaborate. I am particularly wondering about buff orpingtons, wyandottes, ameracaunas.

OK, none of the breeds you mentioned is feather sexed, feather sexing is a way to differentiate sexes at hatching, one of the most known breeds is sex-link which gender-identified at hatching ..

The buff orps and SL wyandottes are not wing sexable as day old, but a 2-3 wks, it is easy to tell the difference. females have longer wing and tail feathers.

Here are some pics of my buffs and SL wyandottes at 4 wks (I don't think this works with americanas though, but it does work with Rhode Island Whites and Speckled Sussex and probably a few others)
