Some of my chickens have lost some of their feathers from their backs...this doesn't seem to be a seasonal thing and not always the same chickens have this happen. Why is this happening and can I do anything to stop it?

It is most likely a rooster mating the hens too often and causing them to lose feathers, which hurts them. This means the rooster needs to be separated. If you do not have a rooster, then a hen must be mounting the other females. Yes, that is a thing. It happens in flocks that do not have a rooster and a hen decides to take the place of rooster.
