I've had chickens for a while and seen them pick on each other and even had some of my own bully's pluck feathers off some of my chickens, but I've never bought a five week old chicken with so many missing.. I bought two coco marans to add to my flock (since they had some older chicks (about five weeks)I decided to get them
I really didn't get a good look at them completly when I was at the store, but once I got me at home and was putting them in my baby coop outside for the day, I noticed one of the chicks had almost all her feathers on her back plucked off. I'm pretty sure it's from overcrowding at the store, and won't get anymore from them again. Has anyone else experienced this from a farm supply store, since so many of her back feathers are missing I'm bring them in the house as I'm worried with so many feathers missing it gets a tad to chilly outside over night.
I told my husband this is one of the reason I started hatching my own, I find sometimes the stores don't take care of the chicks as well as they should..I've seen lots of overcrowding at the stores this year...
