I don't think the broody will work out. She is basically just an incubator. She sits there all day, but SUCKS at protecting her eggs. I could pet her and steal her eggs without her even noticing. Its like her mind is elsewhere...

I'm afraid the growling/pecking/puffing up was just a one night thing

Yes, I believe so. I did end up finding another heat lamp too.

Yes..... Well, what I really want is for Jelly to take a little trip up here, to Oregon, so I could have her, but yeah....

Pippin didn't peck me and she let me hold her chucks and eggs. She was still an amazing mama

Pippin didn't peck me and she let me hold her chucks and eggs. She was still an amazing mama

I did try to sneek chicks under last night. She was fine for some time, but when a chick came out from under her, she pecked it. Definitely bad news.

Another white egg hatched this morning, another white chick.

The chick that hatched this morning gave me a BIG scare today. I got her out into the brooder after she had been in the incubator for several hours. I watched her for several hours and she was doing really well! And then all of a sudden, I went over to check and she was on the farther end of the brooder, lifeless, and cold!

I quickly moved her under the heat lamp, but the other chicks were crowding her. So then I ended up putting her into the incubator to try and see if she will get better. Now, in the present, she is chirping and walking around in the bator. Whew! VERY close call!!

I think I will keep her in the bator for a few more hours...she seems to be weaker than the others. Won't want to make the same mistake again.
