Can this just sit on the ground or does it have to be hung? Right now I feed my girls by just tossing the feed on the ground but soon I will be keeping them in a pen and when the rains come probably have to keep some feed in the coop so I'm looking for good options. I suppose if you just put the feed in a pan they poop in it?

I've been feeding alot of table food. I cook beans and things for them and then mix it with crush eggshells and whatever extra protein I can get, like fish heads cooked and chopped or dry soy nuggets reconstituted. The only type of scratch I can get is, I think, for little chicks. It has mostly powdery grains and very small chunks of corn. I've been mixing that with oatmeal and quinoa that I get at the bulk health food store. I only have 4 birds so its not too expensive.

Yes you can set it on the ground too and best thing about it that the chickens can not poo in it.
I am going to make one more for the outside.

The feeder looks great, but how does it re-supply the feed to the bottom of the cut out bucket? This requires more engineering than my brain can handle.

the main reason I like it because my hen used to spell feed when I put it in just a dish and they wested alot of feed before, and the one at the stors are also good but I just like o save money when i can.

I made one for my bantams by just cutting holes out with a hole saw. They seem to like it. Plus it saved me some money.

Nice feeder ideas. I did a little differently. I got a "hog pan" at the farm store. (Tin pan about 14 inches across, and 3 inches deep) then took a 5 gal bucket and drilled holes--about 1 inch across--all the way around the bottom of the bucket, about 1 or 2 inches from the bottom. Then bolted the bucket to the bottom of the feed pan, centering it, which will leave about 2 inches all around of pan for the feed to fall into. You can fill the bucket, and the chickens eat out of the pan. You can usually get the buckets, as someone stated, at Walmart bakery, usually $1.00, if they even charge, and the hog pan is from $3.50 to $5.00, probably. Good feeder to use while on vacation, also.
