I was wondering if it would be okay to feed Purina Flockraiser instead of Layena because it has more protein in it. I would have oyster shell free-choice for them. I show my birds in 4-H and think that the extra protein would keep their feathers in much better quality?
Thanks--PWF

Hi!

Yes feed Flock Raiser. My flock does better with it vs layena. I have a separate dish of oyster shell for free choice, which the layers eat whenever they want to. I like the higher protein as well.

I mix the two feeds, flockraiser and layena. And use flockraiser as a transition between start & grow and layer feed. my birds love it!

Unfortunately, the flockraiser is a crumble which is the big drawback...lots more waste, and it's a little more expensive than the layena (both reasons are why I mix the two). I usually make the switch around 12 weeks. Alot of people will say that's too soon, but it's a convenience thing for me. I don't have enough room to pen practically full grown "chicks" seperate from the others, so I have a layer pen that gets the combo (pullets go in there around 18 weeks) and then there are two adolescent pens that get fed the flockraiser exclusively. the pens I keep my babies in are too small to house chickens older than 10-12 weeks for very long, so it's a trade-off.

Hmmm, that is kind of a pain about it being a crumble. Maybe I will just feed Flockraiser during the winter/moulting season, and around the time that I show my birds.

We've been told in the mountain West region it is only available as crumble. In fact, most Purina products are only available as crumble here, the exception being Layena.
