In the Brooder
I have hatchery DP pullets, and heritage breed Buff Orpingtons (Hen and rooster) for breeding... I also have a few Orpington pullets and cockerels too..I plan on keeping my cockerels in a separate area(as they will be strictly for meat)and only allowing my rooster to mate with the Orpington pullets(when mature)and hen.. our plan is to allow our hatchery girls to get to size then process, and only have heritage breed chickens from that point on...which hopefully our Orpington hen and rooster will provide..lolThanks, I guess I didn't think hatchery birds would matter that much. The girls we have now are from a hatchery. I don't know of a source for getting breeder quality birds in my area?
You can search kijiji in your area and find ads for heritage breed chickens either day olds, fertilized eggs,or pullets...I know many people in my area had buff, red and black orpingtons, aswell as brahmas, wyandottes, barred rocks and many others...P.S cheaper and better than hatchery
