Feed question> Help??

Ok, here is the story... So I decide to be a nice guy and start buying feed from the local co-op instead of Tractor Supply. So yesterday I was talking to the guy about the brands they have (Blue Seal and Nutrena) The price was the same and he recomended the Nutrena. I asked which feed I should use because the chicks are mid seven week, he told me that the "grower feed" which sounded right. So I pay and go to the loading dock and get the back and put it in my car. When I get home I open the bag and notice that it is "Chick starter / Grower" not "Grower/Finisher" and the bag is labled from day one to six weeks.

The problem is the bag is open and the store insists that it fine to feed the chicks. I only have six chicks so a 50lb bag will push them well into week ten!

Seeing as how they will not take back the open bag, should I just buy another $14.00 worth of feed? I do not like feeding the chicks starter food so late and this stiff is finer than what the Dumor brand was to boot.

Don't get caught up on the definition and the differences that might exist between the two feeds won't matter to a hill of beans to your few animals. Now if you were feeding a barn of 25,000 chicks we would be on a very strict feed budget that may change the feed daily.

So a feed that is listed to switch off at six weeks would not be recomended to feed from ages 7.5 to 10 weeks? On top of that I am switching feeds on them to one that looks even finer than the stuff they were eating.

Yea, welcome to Connecticut! Gas is around $4.35 here to boot!

Well, my wife picked up a bag of Blue Seal grower mash and it is the right food, but as fine as the other stuff so I feel a little better.

Why is the Dumor brand so large compared to these two brands?

While we are on the subject... What would you suggest, Blue Seal or the Nutrunia for feed? I would rather use the local guy and the price is about the same, but I was taken aback by such a simple screw up. I would expect that at Tractror Supply, but a Farmers Co-Op? Geesh!

It probably won't do them any harm, but next time you go, insist on proper grower feed.

I'm also paying the equivalent of $15 for 20kg (44lbs) but this is the world where petrol is £1.18 ($2.36) a litre so $8.93 a gallon - high fuel prices lead to an increase in the cost of just about everything because it all has to be transported, the shop heated etc.

At my local feedstore .... and its top brand too . Purina ... I was ALSO shocked , they have the huge bags of pine shavings for $5.50

What you describe as 'mash' is meant to be fed as a warm wet mush. Warm water is added to the feed and makes a sort of gruel for the chickens. A lot of old farmers believe this is the best way to feed hens and chicks especially in the winter months.

The larger crumbles is just that crumbles. It is a larger nugget but not a pellet.

There is a difference and alot of people don't realize it.

Don't get too caught up in lables.

Start/grower usually has a bit more protein in it and is still very good for your chicken right through to point of lay.

I feed all of my laying hens gamebird starter - 22% protein.

I am tired of playing games with feed mills and their lack of at least fish meal in most feeds. Chickens are omnivors and as such they need protein from meat as well from vegetables.
