Feed question

My 8 four month old, non-laying as of now, chickens are a little over an hour away from where I am now. I spend my weekdays at the farm, and my weekends here. I came here on Friday, and left them with enough food for Friday, Saturday and Sunday I'm sure, as I was planning to go back on Monday morning.

Today I found out that I have to stay here on Monday and won't go to the farm until Tuesday morning. I could call a neighbor to go by and feed them, but would rather not. They've got plenty of water, (4 gallon waterer), and a fair amount of uneaten food from the last few weeks laying around the run and coop. The run is 250 sq ft of grass, stone walls and rock, and they have a coop with plenty of room for 8.

My question is this.... If chickens are without an ideal amount of food for a day, hunger won't kill them, as opposed to a shortage of ventilation or water?

I'm sure they have enough to eat, and I'm building a PVC feeder on Tuesday as I leave them most weekends, but I'm curious.

Thanks,

Pete

You said they have alot of uneaten food on the floor so I would not worry about the food they get hungery they will eat what is on the floor, as well when they scratch what do you think they are doing they are looking for bugs and worms basicly food so I would be more worried about them running out of water then I would be food.
So they should be good but i would build the PVC pipe feeder asap if your going to keep leaving on the weekends like this.
and I would think about getting a water with a float so this way they will have water all the time as well..

Good luck to you

Dear Backyard:

Thanks for the fast response. I'm going to build the feeder Tuesday morning when I get there. As for the waterer, the coop is a 200 year old stone building, and we only have spring water at the farm. I've got a spring overflow line that runs nearby the coop, but the plumbing would be a big project. I thought the 4 gallon waterer would be enough.

I'll think about the float waterer though.

Thanks again,

Pete
