Feed smells... like beer.

Got more chick starter today and both bags smell like beer. inside and out. Can I still give it to my chickens? Not gonna lie, i've already given my 44 - 2 month olds a big scoop of it because they were out. Thanks for any help.

I would take it back to where you bought it.

Beer smell= fermentation= NOT fresh.

Don't use it or you'll end up with drunk birds. Yuck. We had some feed that smelled like that once~it was gross!

I beg to differ. My local mill's fresh feed smells wonderfully like hops. Hops are grain, not rot.

Thanks for the replies. I will call the feed store in the morning to make sure it isn't supposed to smell that way. i've gotten bags of feed from them before and never had any smell like this. I would rather be safe than sorry. And for the price of the bags these days, I want to get my money's worth. Thanks again.

You could be smelling yeast(s) growing in the feed, too, which I don't think would be good for the chickies...

I had some starter that I kept outside. I thought the container was water proof...but after a hard rain, some got in.

It smelled the same way once I opened it. I threw it out just to be safe.

I don't think I'd feed it to the birds if it was a whole sack....I'd take it back too.
