Feed store duckling roulette?

thanks! I got my new Storey's Guide book just yesterday. I forgot I had it.

I got 5 eggs today from my 6 girls today! Wo Wo!

Congratulations! Have you ever eaten duck eggs before? I remember our first egg, my wife and i shared it and it was delicious!

Yes, that's all we have now! My 3 older girls started laying the end of last January so we've been getting them for a year now. The exciting thing for me was that 5 eggs meant that at least 2 of my babies are laying now. I've got 3 old and 3 new.

If you vent sex them they have to be just a day or so old right? Is that the case or can they be a few days old? If so, can you not vent sex the ducklings at the store as long as they are really young? Of course you'd need to bring a magnifying glass.

I tried that last year with the ones I hatched and I was so nervous I wasn't sure what I'd done. I think I needed a bigger magnifying glass!

This is a good idea!! Unfortunately I don't think I'm confident enough to attempt sexing ducklings yet. I might ask if anyone working at the store is willing, though my guess would be: no.

Though in researching this I did find someone who said that females also tend to have much lighter coloring than the boys, and then proved their own hypothesis with their own hatchlings, so. One more trick maybe?

When i got my pekin... half doz. I got 1 drake and 5 ducks, unreal. That was the duck powerball lotto and unlikely to be repeated

I did all 8 with my neighbor who knew as much about it as I did which was zero! We didn't know any more after doing it. You need really good eyes I think. We were both scared because we knew we knew nothing and I was so afraid I was going to hurt them. I think I feel more confident now. We shall see come spring!
